Bill O'Reilly Is to Journalism What the WWE Is to Fighting

President Obama grants a one-on-one television interview to a broadcast journalist, and I sit at home cursing the interviewer for going easy on him. "Would you consider amending the law in way x to make good on your promise?" Or O'Reilly could've raised the issue of Obama's credibility. What response could this possibly elicit other than the banal official line that Obama repeated? Said O'Reilly, "Your detractors believe that you did not tell the world it was a terror attack because your campaign didn't want that out." Even if that were true, is Obama really going to appear in a one-on-one with O'Reilly and say, "Well, Bill, I knew it was a terror attack from the beginning but I tried to pretend otherwise for a couple of days because I thought I could get away with it-it was a naked political calculation designed to hide my core softness on terrorism." O'Reilly covers well-trod ground less sure-footedly than many who've gone before him, trots out a few right-wing theories that even he won't put his name behind, and produces an interview that serves his interests and Obama's interests just fine, but shortchanges everyone who has an interest in more information.

The Champion Barack Obama

He becomes a champion of black imagination, of black dreams and black possibilities. How does a black writer approach The Man when The Man is not just us, but the Champion of our ambitions? More, how do you approach the offices that have so often brutalized black people when those offices are occupied by the Champion? How do you acknowledge the president's many gifts, his actual accomplishments, while still and all outlining the depressing limits of his own imagination? The president is correct that there is a long history of black leaders addressing "Personal responsibility." But as a diagnosis for what has historically gone wrong in black communities, the tradition is erroneous. So great is this weakness that the experience of black fatherlessness can connect Barack Obama in Hawaii to young black boys on the South Side, and that fact-whatever the charts, graphs, and histories may show-is bracing.

Charlie Crist's The Party's Over Reviewed by Isaac Chotiner

Charlie Crist's new book, lazily titled The Party's Over, is a cause for both anger and sadness. At one moment in the book-after recounting an irksome Rubio profile in The New York Times-he quotes Rubio on the Tea Party: "An important part of a bigger movement in America united behind the idea that you don't have to get rid of everything that's right about America to fix what is wrong about our great country." To this, Crist adds: "What empty platitudes! I remember thinking when I read that." It's touching to see "The people's governor" express dismay over platitudes, although Rubio's statement doesn't even really qualify as platitudinous. The Rubio-Crist match-up is indeed the soulless heart of the book, because it marked the moment when Crist formally ditched the Republican Party. Crist highlights his Palin concerns to underline his own worries about the Republican Party being too conservative, even though it took him until 2010-when he was on the verge of being crushed by Rubio-to finally see the light.

The End of American Exceptionalism

A 2013 poll by the Public Religion Research Institute found that while almost two in three Americans over 65 call themselves "Extremely proud to be American," among Americans under 30 it is fewer than two in five. According to a 2011 Pew poll, young Americans were 14 points more likely than older Americans to say that the wealthy in America got there mainly because "They know the right people or were born into wealthy families" rather than because of their "Hard work, ambition, and education." And as young Americans internalize America's lack of economic mobility, they are developing the very class consciousness the United States is supposed to lack. A 2011 Pew study found that while Americans over 30 favored capitalism over socialism by 27 points, Americans under 30 narrowly favored socialism. Perhaps young Americans, having in their formative years watched Bush's epic post-9/11 vision breed lies, brutality, and state collapse, and America's celebrated capitalist system descend into financial crisis, have gained their own appreciation of American fallibility.

Obama urges calm in Central African Republic

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE - President Barack Obama is urging the people of the Central African Republic to remain calm amid mounting sectarian violence. The White House says Obama taped the audio message Monday in Dakar, Senegal, as Air Force One was refueling on its way to Johannesburg for a memorial service honoring former South African President Nelson Mandela. Obama addressed his remarks to the "Proud citizens of the Central African Republic" and said they have the power "To choose a different path" than the violence that led to more than 400 deaths in two days of violence last week between Christians and Muslims. Obama says he joins Muslim and Christian leaders in calling for calm and peace and says those who are committing crimes should be arrested.

Negotiators Reach Compromise on Defense Bill

WASHINGTON - House and Senate negotiators reached final agreement Monday on a Pentagon policy bill that would strengthen protections for military victims of sexual assault and keep the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, open over President Obama's strenuous objections, as Congress rushed to wrap up work for the year. The new measure would prevent commanding officers from overturning sexual assault verdicts, expand a special victims counsel program for the survivors of sexual assault throughout the military and make retaliation for reporting assault a crime. Significantly, for criminal complaints, including sexual assault, courts of investigation - known as Article 32 hearings - would act more like preliminary hearings looking for probable cause to pursue a court-martial. The measure is the first change to law governing sexual assault in the military in years, stemming from the furor that has erupted over the rising numbers of sexual assaults in the military; there were 3,553 sexual assault complaints reported in the first three quarters of this fiscal year, a nearly 50 percent increase over the same period a year earlier.

Parties in California Squabble Over Another Website

The state's Democrats are accusing Republicans of trying to sabotage the state-run exchange by putting up their own health care website. The Republican website initially had only a few links to the state's health care site, though more were added after Democrats complained. Republicans in the Assembly have maintained that the website, which has been active since August but only recently drew the public ire of Democrats, is simply an attempt to answer constituents' questions about the health care law and to help them understand their options. Mr. Gomez suggested that the Republican site violates that law, because its name is similar to the state-run exchange's and because it includes tabs for people with insurance, people without insurance and employers, much like the state website.

Amid the Uproar Over the Health Law, Voices of Quiet Optimism and Relief

Since his chronic leukemia was diagnosed in 2010, Ray Acosta has paid dearly for health insurance: more than $800 a month in premiums, plus steep co-payments for the drug that helps keep him alive. She connected him with an application counselor at a community health center, who found - to Mr. Acosta's astonishment - that he qualified for Medicaid under the new health care law, the Affordable Care Act, which gives states the option of expanding the program to include more low-income adults. For many, particularly people with existing medical conditions like Mr. Acosta, the coverage is proving less expensive than what they had. Many others are getting health insurance for the first time in years, giving them alternatives to seeking care through free clinics or emergency rooms - or putting it off indefinitely. Not all who need health insurance are happy with their new options.

Afraid of Free Speech, on Many Fronts: PEN, Google, China, Goliath

The event in question featured Max Blumenthal, who was being interviewed about his book on Israel, Goliath, by Peter Bergen, the well-known writer on war-and-terrorism topics. I wasn't involved in inviting Max Blumenthal, but having read his book before the session and now having heard him speak, I am glad that New America and its president, Anne-Marie Slaughter, stood by their invitation. As he put it in a recent interview with Salon, the book is "An unvarnished view of Israel at its most extreme." Again, the power of his book is not that Blumenthal disagrees with these groups. In its English version, the Jewish Daily Forward excoriated his book: "Max Blumenthal's Goliath Is Anti-Israel Book That Makes Even Anti-Zionists Blush." Whereas the Yiddish edition of the Forward has a review that is quite respectful of the book and the importance of such criticism.

In Washington, deadlines crashed and holidays trashed

Well, December 13 is Friday and House and Senate negotiators don't yet have a deal. That's not the only thing Congress has to work on before the House is supposed to leave town, also on Friday, and the Senate at the end of next week. House Republicans want to drop 3.8 million people from those rolls next year - about 8% of recipients - while Senate Democrats aren't keen on those cuts. While the Senate is scheduled to be in town for two weeks, it must hurry since the House is set to leave on Friday.

Obama heading to South Africa for Mandela memorial

President Barack Obama has taken off for South Africa to attend a national memorial service for anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela. Obama has called Mandela a personal hero, and his own political rise has drawn inevitable comparisons to the former South African leader. "President Obama would believe that the challenges he has faced pale in comparison to those faced by President Mandela," Valerie Jarrett, Obama's senior adviser, said in an interview this summer before the president made a trip to South Africa. Obama did meet with several members of Mandela's family and made an emotional visit to Robben Island, standing with his wife and two daughters in the tiny cell where the South African leader spent 18 of his 27 years in prison.

Hagel orders US support in Central African Republic mission

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered the U.S. military to transport Burundian troops to Central African Republic, as part of an international effort to quell sectarian violence in that country. The decision, amid warnings that the historically unstable country could be on the verge of genocide, would assist both French and African Union troops who already have been deployed. Muslim rebel groups tied to an alliance organization called Seleka are clashing with Christian fighters. President Michel Djotodia had demanded that the fighters who brought him to power remain in their barracks Monday so that French forces and African troops from a regional peacekeeping mission could secure the city.

Advocates Struggle to Reach Immigrants Eligible for Deferred Action

"It's the only game in town right now for undocumented immigrants, and we need to do everything to maximize participation in the program," said Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, a leading advocacy group in New York City. By some estimates, about half of the eligible immigrants have not applied, with participation particularly low in some immigrant-rich states like New York and Florida and among some large immigrant groups, including the Chinese, Dominicans and Filipinos. The participation rate has varied wildly depending on the immigrant group: It was at 66 percent among Mexicans, 59 percent among Hondurans and 55 percent among Brazilians, while only 16 percent of Filipinos, 14 percent of Dominicans and fewer than 9 percent of Chinese have signed up, according to a study published in August by the institute. The range in application rates among immigrant groups has been harder to figure out, they said.

Obama, Bush, Clinton to travel to South Africa

WASHINGTON - At least three American presidents will travel to South Africa to attend memorial services for anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, who died Thursday at age 95.The White House said Friday that President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama would travel to South Africa next week to pay their respects. Former President Bill Clinton said he also planned to travel to South Africa, along with his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Mandela's death has sparked an outpouring of memorials and celebrations of the former prisoner turned president who led his country out of apartheid rule. In remarks following Mandela's death, Obama counted himself as one of the countless millions inspired by the South African leader.

Billy Joel, 4 others receive Kennedy Center Honors

The "Piano Man" who became one of the world's best-selling artists of all time with such hits as "Just the Way You Are," "Uptown Girl" and "Allentown" is being awarded the nation's highest honor Sunday for influencing American culture through the arts. Joel just announced a 2014 concert series at Madison Square Garden in New York "To avoid schlepping around the world," but he still plans to play concerts nationwide. Kerry said the artists had blazed trails and redefined the arts and American culture along the way. More recently she's been playing a role in "Downton Abbey" on PBS. MacLaine's younger brother Warren Beatty also has won a Kennedy Center Honor, making them the first brother and sister to both receive the honor.

A bipartisan congressional delegation will travel to South Africa this week to pay their respects to anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, who died Thursday at age 95. The group of 24 congressmen will be led by GOP Rep. Aaron Schock, who said in a Sunday statement he will forever be inspired by Mandela's "Forgiveness, leadership, and class." The congressmen will leave D.C. Monday afternoon and will attend the state memorial service for Mandela on Tuesday in Johannesburg. The congressmen going besides Schock and Cruz are Reps.

A Frustrating Year For Immigration Activists

At the start of the year there was widespread expectation among Latinos that 2013 would bring with it a new immigration law. NPR national political correspondent Don Gonyea this week visited with immigration activists in North Carolina, and found frustration as the year comes to a close. HealthCare.gov adviser to be replaced when leaves for Obama econ job

Gov website, will be replaced when he leaves to start his new job as a top economic adviser to President Barack Obama, a White House official said on Monday. Jennifer Palmieri, the White House communications director, told MSNBC that Zients' departure date as a special adviser for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is as yet unclear. Zients was chosen by Obama in September to take over from Gene Sperling as director of the White House National Economic Council. "Right now Jeff is focused on the website," Palmieri said.

The Denver City Council on Monday rejected an ordinance to prohibit marijuana use on front porches, in front yards, or anywhere on their properties in public view, The Denver Post reported. "There are likely proposals that may or may not make sense. The one in Denver does not. Currently, it is entirely legal for adults to consume alcohol and cigarettes in public. It is irrational to make it illegal for marijuana smokers not to be able to do the same."
